Welcome all homeless Duolingo Immersion fans!
Edit: Perhaps in an attempt to be both light-hearted and not give too much away until we are ready to launch, I relied on the thread title and didn't spell out exactly what this pilot is about. To be clear, we are looking at a new website facility that looks and feels like Duolingo Immersion. It is not based around using Google Docs.
I have been working with JoThelan and ifphigenia overnight to come up with a new parliament* where we can live in peace, after being ejected from the Duo Owl's barn (is there such a thing as a green Barn Owl?).
The good news is that we already have somewhere in mind, kitted out with shiny new perches and an Immersion-like interface that would probably make the Owl green with envy, not that you could see the difference.
Although it is early days yet, we want to make sure this new facility is set up in a controlled manner, so we don't suffer from the spoilers and general unpleasantness that put some Duolingo users off Immersion altogether. We also want to keep the pilot low key, so that the owners of our new parliament building don't get scared they are being invaded by large broods of owlets, until we have had a chance to study their "lease agreement" (i.e. Terms and Conditions) in more detail.
JoThelan has her hands full with running this wildlife rescue centre (US center), so I am looking at this stage for a minimum of two volunteers:
- An Administrator. Someone familiar with website administration to take on the general configuration and control of user registration and authorisation, plus have overall sight of the facility.
This role would probably suit an ex-Duolingo Mod down to the ground (hint, hint). You can also carry out any of the below functions.
It's not too onerous. I've managed to move in and set up shop in just a couple of hours, and I need someone to hand over the keys to. I can also act as backup, but I won't be available much for the next few days, as I'm going away on business tomorrow and will be out of reach for much of the time.
- A Project Coordinator. To set up the first pilot translation project. You need to establish the project by uploading the document to be translated, configuring the language and glossary options, inviting Translators to be assigned to the project. Then stand back and watch. You can also translate if you want.
Please remember this is just a pilot to try out the new parliament building, err ... website, so there is no long term commitment required here. (Yet ).
So, volunteers please ... . I need your username please, and your role preference(s) if you are volunteering your services. Not just a click on the poll, which is simply to gauge general interest in this initiative.
I'll leave this thread running for a few days to give everyone interested a chance to reply. PM me if you have any questions or concerns you don't want to air in public.
Hopefully I, SussexSoleil or your new Immersion Admin or PC will be back in touch soon.
* the English collective noun for a group of owls.

If anyone wants to translate into Finnish or from Finnish then I am happy to become a resource co-ordinator. I have already started two projects, so I guess that makes me a project co-ordinator too.

I really don't think I know enough German to be a Project Coordinator (Just reached about Halfway down the German Tree), but I am willing to try a bit in Project Translator. Just be aware I might be slower and make more mistakes than a more experienced person in translating the German and English languages, but I am just as committed to learn!

I can be a project coordinator for French to English and English to French. I will also be a translator in both of those directions, and I'd also like to be a (very rudimentary) translator for Russian to English when/if someone organizes that.

I see myself as more of a translator of French to English, and maybe later on from English to French. Thanks.

Can you give out more info on administration, or can we go on a test run?(Second one preferred) If it doesn't require much time (and programming knowledge), I think I can handle website administration.
I'll be more than happy to act as a Farsi-English English-Farsi translator (and a resource coordinator for these languages, if needed). I'm not a language specialist by definition.

I would like to be a translator for French to English and I specifically like translating Wikipedia articles about geography, landmarks, and politics. Hi tim608103, Thanks for your offer. I would just like to stress (to everyone) at this stage, the pilot is to assess the viability and features of the proposed facility, as a replacement for Duolingo Immersion. At this stage, it is more about selection and usability of the website for collaborative translations than any specific content. Anything we do here should be regarded as a proof on concept and may not even be retained at the end of the pilot. However, we definitely need to consider whether we can easily import HTML (Wikipedia-style) formats, as well as unformatted and formatted text (e.g. Gutenberg) sources of translation materials, and I will try to keep your preferences in mind when we are ready to launch. If I get time later this week, I will make another thread to set out a list of criteria we should investigate, ranging from the UI (user interface) all the way through to security of personal information like email addresses. Thanks again for your contribution to this project.
